Black Art: In the Absence of Light

Please join us at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 5th for our FREE screening of this remarkable film, showcasing the work of some of the foremost African-American visual artists, including Theaster Gates, Kerry James Marshall, Faith Ringgold, Amy Sherald, Carrie Mae Weems, and many others..

This 2021 documentary by acclaimed director & producer Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI - 2020; Mr Soul! - 2018; Sammy Davis, Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me - 2017) was inspired by the 1976 exhibition "Two Centuries of Black American Art", curated by David C. Driscoll.

David C. Driskell was a legendary American artist, scholar and curator; recognized for his work in establishing African-American Art as a distinct field of study. In his lifetime, Professor Driskell was cited as one of the world's leading authorities on the subject of African-American Art. This groundbreaking exhibit was the first comprehensive survey of Black art put on display for the general public, and played a major role in moving the cultural landscape toward greater equity for artists of color.

Black Art: In the Absence of Light is a gorgeous, provocative, and insightful film. Special thanks to benefactors Carol Dengle and Olinka Green for co-sponsoring this screening with their financial support!
